  • Shubman Gill spoke at India’s press conference before the Champions Trophy final.

India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill attended the press conference before the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand on March 9 at Dubai International Stadium. This will be Gill’s second final, after India’s loss to Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Now, as Rohit Sharma’s deputy, he has a chance for redemption.

Gill said he is excited for the big match and promised to improve India’s fortunes by winning the Champions Trophy.
“I am quite excited. This is my second final. I would like to better the fortunes from last time. I would like to win the Champions Trophy,” Gill said in the pre-match press conference on March 8.

Gill said this is the best batting lineup he has played in. He has not chosen between Kohli and Rohit as his ODI great.

“This is the best batting line-up that I have been a part of. Rohit is one of the ODI greats, and Virat is Virat,” Gill added.

India’s vice-captain acknowledged the big game pressure but said the team that handles it better will win the title.

“There is definitely pressure for a big match. Whoever deals with it better wins. Say like the Windies team from yesteryears, Australia in the 2000s, they would take themselves out of that pressure and play the game. It is easy to say, very difficult to do. Whenever pressure comes in, it has a tendency to build up in your mind,” he concluded.

India will have a psychological edge after beating New Zealand in the group stage. However, the Kiwis have been dominant in the tournament with their strong all-round performance in batting, bowling, and fielding.
