2) India has scored 174 runs after losing 2 wickets on the fourth day

On the fourth day of the fourth Test being played in Manchester, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul have put India in a strong position by scoring brilliant half-centuries. Thanks to the partnership of both, India reduced England’s lead to 137 runs.Gill and Rahul completed the second session on Saturday without losing any wicket, and Gill’s half-century was completed in the last over just before the end of the session.

In the last session too, both of them did not lose their wickets. In this way, Rahul is unbeaten on 87 and Gill on 78 runs at the crease.  By the end of the fourth day, India has scored 174 runs after losing 2 wickets. Now only the last day is left in the match and we have to see whether this match is drawn on the fifth day or England wins. Because it is almost impossible for India to win this match.

India started the day very badly and at one point it seemed that the team would be all out on a low score. Chris Woakes took two wickets in two balls in the very first over.  Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan, who had scored half-centuries in the first innings, both got out for zero this time. At the lunch break, India were 1/2 in 3 overs, and England had a lead of 310 runs.

England’s first innings

England’s first innings ended at 669 runs, giving them a lead of 311 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was India’s best bowler, taking 4 wickets. England captain Ben Stokes scored 141 runs, bringing up his 14th Test century. He scored a century after two years and became the fifth male captain in the world to score a century and take 5 wickets in the same match.

Joe Root scored 150 runs off 248 balls, breaking several records. His 142-run partnership with Stokes put India under pressure. Although Stokes had to retire hurt due to cramps, he later returned to bat. Root was dismissed by Jadeja, after which England lost a few quick wickets in the third session.

India’s First Innings

Earlier, England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first. India’s first innings ended at 358 runs. Jasprit Bumrah, for the first time in his career, conceded over 100 runs in a single innings.

Multiple Indian batters with 500-plus in the same away Test

  1. Sunil Gavaskar (774) and Dilip Sardesai (642) scored 500+ runs in the same away Test series vs West Indies in 1970–71.
  2. Shubman Gill (697) & KL Rahul (508) vs ENG, 2025.

Rahul also became the second Asian opener after Gavaskar (542 in 1979) to notch up 500-plus runs in a Test series in England. He is also the first visiting opener to reach this mark in England in the 21st century since South Africa’s Graeme Smith, who scored 714 in 2003.

What should India do to grind out a Draw?

The initial period of the innings is critical, especially given the conditions at Old Trafford that favour swing bowling early on. The English bowlers, led by the likes of Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer, bring sustained pressure that can yield early breakthroughs. India will have to weather this storm by maintaining tight defense and patience in the face of probing deliveries. India lost early wickets on Day 5 at Lord’s, and they simply can’t repeat that here.
