Jasprit Bumrah Wins ICC Cricketer of the Year

Premium Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has made history by becoming the first fast bowler and the fifth Indian player overall to win the prestigious ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year title. He previously received the Test Cricketer of the Year award due to his outstanding performances with the red ball. Bumrah played a crucial role for India in T20 internationals, helping the team win the T20 World Cup in 2024 and ending their trophy drought. Other Indian players who have received this esteemed award include Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli, with Kohli winning it consecutively two times.

Jasprit Bumrah won the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award, triumphing over strong competition from Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook. He became the fifth Indian to receive this honor, following in the footsteps of Virat Kohli (2017, 2018), Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), and Ravichandran Ashwin (2016). Bumrah’s exceptional performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25, where he took an impressive 32 wickets, also earned him the title of ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year.

Jasprit Bumrah expressed his thoughts on winning the award.

In addition to expressing his happiness at receiving the honour, Bumrah said that winning the 2024 T20 World Cup would always hold a special place in his heart.

“”I am truly thrilled to receive the Sir Garfield Sobers Men’s Cricketer of the Year award. Last year was particularly memorable, especially since we won the T20 World Cup in Barbados, a moment that will always hold a special place in my heart. As a child, I watched many of my heroes win this prestigious ICC award, so it brings me great joy to be among them,” said Bumrah.

The Indian pacer shifted his focus to the T20 World Cup after delivering an outstanding home debut against England. India went on to defeat South Africa in the final to claim the trophy, and Bumrah ended the tournament with 15 wickets, boasting an impressive average of 8.26. His exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Tournament award. Additionally, Bumrah distinguished himself from other nominees with his impressive results in Test matches, where he took 71 wickets in 13 games—more than any other bowler in 2024.

To prepare for the Champions Trophy in February, the Indian pacer is recovering from a back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
